Dental implants are an extremely effective and versatile treatment option to replace a missing tooth. Implants replace and very closely mimic a natural tooth in both looks and function.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth that replaces and imitates missing teeth so closely that they feel just like a natural tooth. The implant itself is a medical grade titanium alloy which is the base for an implant crown. The crown is very similar to a regular crown.
Tooth loss causes many challenges, of which the most obvious are difficulties chewing, speaking clearly, and aesthetics. Other problems include bone loss, moving teeth, and bite imbalances. These issues develop over time due to no root system maintaining the bone and alignment of the teeth and jaw. Dental implants overcome both the immediate and long term problems and are the most effective method to treat tooth loss.
What is the procedure for dental implants?
The actual surgery is straightforward. The implant site is cleaned and prepared, then a pilot hole is placed. Once the pilot hole is placed, the implant is then torqued in and closed up. While the surgery itself is simple, there is a substantial amount of preparation that is necessary to ensure the success of the implant. A consultation determines if the implant site has a sufficient foundation and also if the adjacent teeth are healthy enough. Once the implant site is determined to be adequate, the implant is placed so it can heal. Afterwards, we schedule regular check ups to ensure proper healing and integration of the implant.
Are dental implants safe?
Yes, dental implants are a safe and effective treatment option with a very high success rate. While there is some risk involved, they are minimized with proper planning and preparation of the implant site.
What are dental implants made of?
Dental implants are made of a medical grade titanium alloy, which is similar to the material used in hip, knee and other joint replacements. The titanium implant is very compatible with our jaws and has an extremely low allergy rate. This makes dental implants a very safe and effective option to replace missing teeth.
